OnCallMBD is a new kind of service for law firm CMBDOs. We are a collective of the most experienced experts who can be called upon to help CMBDOs with specific one-off projects at any stage, or a special advisory need.
Each expert has at least 15 years of proven experience leading specific areas, and they can be deployed whenever a CMBDO needs a trusted expert counterpart to lead an important project, advise on a special assignment, or oversee a critical, short-term need. Let us identify the best expert for you.

If you are a sitting law firm CMBDO (or you serve in the most senior role in your firm overseeing your marketing or BD department), you can now engage a senior counterpart on a project, advisory, or specialized role basis through OnCallMBD. We have formed a collective of veteran CMBDOs and senior directors willing and eager to help you, on your terms.
At OnCallMBD, we are a need-specific solution for any sitting law firm CMBDO who seeks a law firm marketing or BD expert to handle a high-level project, to fill a specialized function for a limited period, or to achieve a specific goal with assistance from someone who has the same level of experience and insight they do and whom they can trust.
The OnCallMBD Collective Is Composed of CMBDO Veterans Who Can Advise and Support Sitting CMBDOs
All our members have been in the same place as you. You are at the top of your game, and of your department, but there may not be a counterpart within the firm you can turn to for advice or assistance. OnCallMBD answers that need.
We are not fractional CMBDOs
We do, however, provide a service beyond the fractional CMBDO model.* We have discovered an untapped need in law firms for something different.
Now that a matured law firm marketing ecosystem is in place, there is no shortage of excellent CMBDO veterans who provide important consulting services. The challenge has been that a majority of veteran CMBDOs seek assignments to replace a CMBDO on an interim or fractional basis, not as an adjunct to a sitting CMBDO.
We saw a gap in finding senior-expert availability to support sitting CMBDOs, so we created OnCallMBD to fill that need.
When a firm has an existing CMBDO who would like access to CMBDO-level expertise for advice on a short-term basis or to oversee a special project, they need someone proven and reliable. OnCallMBD was founded to provide access to those proven experts.

Our members are vetted prior CMBDOs and senior directors who understand a CMBDO’s need for highly specific expertise from a trusted expert counterpart for a limited period or purpose. We do not and will not place our members as interim or permanent CMBDOs so that there is zero competition or confusion about their intent as OnCallMBD limited consultants.

Getting started is easy. Tell us what you need by answering a few short questions on our Find an MBD Experts page. If you're unsure what you may need or if you'd like to discuss the possibilities, get in touch with us here.
Once you have submitted your request, we will send you information on our recommended experts best suited to your needs. You can choose one or more recommendations to contact, or we can contact them for you to vet their interest and availability. The final contact and decision to retain an OnCallMBD expert, as well as the fee arrangements, can happen in one conversation between you and the expert you've chosen. We are happy to advise on customary pricing our experts may charge for the project you have in mind.
There is no commitment required to explore your needs with us at OnCallMBD through one of our project advisors. Once you decide to engage an OnCallMBD expert, you control all the terms of your commitment and engagement directly with the expert you have selected.
OnCallMBD experts are advisors and sounding boards, and for projects that require very specific expertise, they can parachute in to see the project through with the full confidence of the CMBDO and other firm management. They are not meant to be interim CMBDOs or oversee an entire department – those needs are best filled through interim CMBDO providers.
The experts we recommend understand that OnCallMBD members are retained to support and report to CMBDOs and other senior leaders of law firm MBD departments, not to take their place. This trust is paramount to everyone's success when the stakes are so high.
Fractional CMOs have a place in some law firms that do not need a full-time CMBDO, but they are not part of OnCallMBD's purpose or role. We are happy to refer a firm seeking an interim CMBDO to our network of excellent fractional CMBDOs or to our favorite recruiters.We exist to answer an age-old pain point since the beginning of law firm marketing and BD: who can a CMBDO turn to when a specific high-stakes project or other need requires the experience and knowledge of another CMBDO-level expert? OnCallMBD answers that need. OnCallMBD experts dive in to handle projects with specific parameters instead of joining a firm for a long-term, open-ended, full-time or regular employment position.
All aspects of any fee arrangement for the expert's services are to be handled directly between the law firm and the expert.
